Egan080's Review and Opinion: On Wednesday, May 25, 1983 - six years to the day after the premiere of George Lucas's Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope, millions of people stood in long lines in front of movie theaters so they could watch the third film of the Star Wars Trilogy on opening day.
Written by Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Return of the Jedi ties up all the loose story strands not just from the Luke Skywalker trilogy but the yet-to-be-made Prequels as well, for it is in this film that viewers first learned that Darth Vader WAS the Sith alter ego of Anakin Skywalker, the so-called Chosen One of Jedi prophecy who was destined to restore balance to the Force.
The 2006 Limited Ediition DVD is, in my view, the best way to appreciate Lucas's series finale because it gives new fans an opportunity to compare the 2004 re-edit of the Special Edition and the 1983 theatrical release.
In the 2004 DVD verrsion there are fewer dialogue revisions than in either A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back, but the ending is visually different, with new footage added on to make it jive better with the Prequels. Purists who don't like those changes or new fans who want to see what the first version of Jedi looked like can watch Disc 2.
Interestingly, if George Lucas had not had a bitter dispute with the Director's Guild of America over the credits of The Empire Strikes Back, his first choice as director of Jedi was Steven Spielberg. Not that the late Richard Marquand didn't do a fine job, because he did, but one wonders what this film might have been like had it been helmed by Indiana Jones' other creator.

 Visual Aspects 93.33% |
Though in the 2004 version there are some CGI enhancements, the 1983 one still looks good visually. |

 Auditory Aspects 100.00% |
John Williams's score and Ben Burtt's organic sound effects are simply amazing. |

 Cinematography 80.00% |
Interestingly, the wipes and dissolves are hi-tech versions of those in 1930s serials. Editing is great in the whole series. |

 Plot/story 90.00% |
Essentially, Star Wars is a melange of myths and epic sagas from various cultures, but seems original. |
 Character 85.00% |
The characters were pretty believable, given that this is a fantasy. Vader is tricky unless you watch the entire six-film saga. |

 Acting 80.00% |
The acting was a bit hammy in places, but on the whole the actors did well. |
 General 83.33% |
On the whole, Jedi still works well, perhaps better in 2008 because the saga is complete now. |
