Egan080's Review and Opinion: Nine years have passed since the premiere of Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and though there are still many fans who loathe this film for various reasons - too talky, wooden acting, too much CGI, and Jar Jar Binks being the most cited ones - I think time has been kinder to it than most of its critics give it credit for.
Sure, the first Star Wars movie in 16 years was hyped a bit too much, and there was no way writer-director George Lucas could meet every expectation for it in the fans' hearts and minds. Thus the (unwarranted) ridicule that the film was too geared toward kids, too political, or too dependent on CGI at the expense of story.
I think Episode I is worth watching for various reasons. It does start the story of the Skywalker family and its involvement in the rise and fall of the evil Empire on a logical note. It is consistent with the backstory Lucas established in the prologue to the ghostwritten novelization of Star Wars way back in '76. It even works on a somewhat poetic structure kind of groove; watch carefully as Anakin Skywalker's experiences mirror his son Luke's as the young Jedi-to-be faces some of the same choices in life yet the outcomes differ.
Another good thing about the film is that Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine in 1983's Return of the Jedi, returns to the saga to play, essentially, a younger version of Palpatine as a seemingly honest Senator from Naboo.
Of course, I think Darth Maul (Ray Park) deserved a bit more screen time and I wish there had been a bit less of Jar Jar, but on the whole the movie doesn't, well, suck. It's perhaps the weakest of the six Episodes, but it is still worth watching.
After all, "every saga has a beginning," and for Star Wars, this is it.

Ben Burtt's sound effects add realism to Lucas's imaginary worlds, and John Williams adds another memorable score. |

Okay, we know where the story is supposed to go, but still, there were a few surprises when it first came out. |

On the whole, given that this is a fantasy movie, the characters were believable. |

Jake Lloyd did okay for a kid, but the adult actors were better. |

While there were a few issues fans still argue about, Episode I is still fun to watch if not as good as A New Hope |
