Egan080's Review and Opinion: There is something universally appealing about Summer of '42 that touches anyone who watches it with an open mind and heart. For most men, it will either remind them about their own first times or their childhood buddies. For other guys, it will have them falling in love with the gorgeous Jennifer O'Neill, who plays Dorothy, the married woman that young Hermie (Gary Grimes) gets the hots for during the summer of 1942. Women might enjoy the silly but sweet comedy of Herman Raucher's screenplay, or they will love the fact that - years later - Raucher admitted that the movie WAS based on his own first time and that there was a real Dorothy out there.
This has been called by some people the guys' equivalent to a "chick flick," and after watching it, I can understand why. It's unusually reflective and personal, yet some of the humor is uniquely guy-oriented.
Had it been made in the 1990s or 2000s, the lovemaking scene might have been more graphic than the one here, but this film isn't so much about the sex than it is about love. especially lost love, and the power it has over us all.

This is one oof the loveliest movies, production-wise, that I have seen and own. |

 Auditory Aspects 90.00% |
Michel Legrand's theme is lovely and inspired various covers. Sound is well-done and evokes the 1940s well. |

 Cinematography 100.00% |
The photography looks a bit misty, perhaps done so deliberately to evoke memories. |

Although there have been lots of "first time" films, this one is unique as far as emotional resonance goes. |

The kids (Hermie, Oscy, and Benjie) were totally believable. Awesome acting and great characters. |

If you're not into sentimental pictures, this won't be for you, but this is clearly one of the best coming-of-age movies ever made. |
