ellezeppelin00's Review and Opinion:
The song is mostly compared to Curtis Mayfield’s People Get Ready. If you just listen to the chorus it is passive, inactive. If you listen more to the lyrics it does give hope that things will change and people will act soon in the future.
The song had mix reviews citing that the song was lovely and anger free to being a spineless social justice song. Being compared to “People Get Ready doesn’t make it easier for this song which had the theme of urging everyone to get involved, or risk being left behind'. This is John Mayer’s first take on politics. He commented that- "You cannot avoid war in life, you cannot avoid the fear of terrorism, you cannot avoid those things now, they are a part of everyday demeanor.
Though the message of the chorus becomes clearer than the other parts of the lyrics, the song because of its blues and RnB influence is fresh coming out of John Mayer. It just makes you relax and perhaps become inactive as well.
